Do you need a mobile app, or just a better mobile website?

By Leading Edge Digital Media · · 2 min read

"Should we have an app?" is one of the most common questions we hear. Sometimes the answer is a confident yes. Often, the better first move is a faster, more capable mobile website. Here's how to tell the difference.

Signs an app is worth it

  • Customers come back often - weekly or more - and would appreciate a one-tap shortcut on their home screen.
  • Notifications add real value: booking reminders, order updates, event changes, loyalty rewards.
  • You need device features like the camera, location, Bluetooth or offline access.
  • The experience is the product, such as a member community, a booking tool or a companion to a physical service.

Signs a better mobile website is the smarter move

  • Most visitors find you through search or social media and visit occasionally.
  • The main goal is to inform, enquire or buy once.
  • Your current site is slow or awkward on phones - an app won't fix that, and it's where new customers meet you first.

The middle path

Many businesses start with an excellent mobile website and a client or member portal, then add an app once they can see exactly which features people use every week. That approach costs less up front and means your app launches with features customers have already proven they want.
